Frieze Saint Laurent

6th Apr –
30th Apr 2016

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GALLERY WILL BE CLOSED FOR ANZAC WEEKEND 23 - 26 APRIL.

An exhibition of new drawings, installation and an artist book by MATT ELLWOOD.

One year in the making, the exhibition "Frieze Saint Laurent" includes a suite of eight charcoal drawings of subject matter taken from eight editions of art-world staple ‘Frieze’ magazine. Interrogating the authority, excesses and machinations of the global fashion industry as it bisects with worlds of art, Ellwood extends theconcerns addressed in "Il Fumo Tom Ford", his previous solo exhibition at Melanie Roger Gallery.

"Frieze Saint Laurent" involves meticulous re-imagings of print campaigns taken from one particular luxury fashion house, enlarged to almost twice their size and interrupted by text overlaid from the surrounding pages of the arts publications they appeared within.

Alongside these detailed and labour-intensive charcoal drawings, will be displayed a limited edition artist book on individual plywood constructions that continue Ellwood’s installation practice, referencing modernist furniture design and minimalism. This series of performative objects present themselves, dividing the gallery space and inviting particular viewing behaviour.

Having followed a set of self-imposed rules and executed precise actions and tasks Ellwood exhibits the results of these processes in a circular, hermetic configuration of components that combine to form an incisive and irreverent meditation on art publishing as well as the customisation, logomania and power-plays of the fashion industry.
