Harvey Benge

Bio.

Harvey Benge (1944–2019) was a prolific photographer and committed maker of photobooks. Working between Auckland and Paris he published over 70 titles, often in the form of limited editions. Publishers included Dewi Lewis in the UK, Kehrer Verlag in Germany and Super Labo in Japan, as well as Benge’s own imprint FAQEDITIONS. His photographs have also been shown in public and private galleries in the UK and throughout Europe as well as in New Zealand. He has twice been a finalist in the prestigious Prix du Livre at Arles Photography Festival, France.

His photographs explore the anthropology of cities, the nature of impermanence and the small moments of everyday life. Benge’s work, which became increasingly autobiographical, sought to make the viewer question what is overlooked or unseen. Throughout Benge’s life he collaborated with writers, composers and other international photographers, including: Jessica Backhaus, Gerry Badger, John Gossage, Todd Hido, Rob Hornstra, Rinko Kawauchi, Eva Maria Ocherbauer, Martin Parr, Alec Soth, Daido Moriyama, JH Engstrom, Roe Ethridge, Takashi Homma, Ron Jude, Christian Patterson, Slavica Perkovic, Bertien van Manen, Terri Weifenbach, Jon Carapiet, Haru Sameshima, Stu Sontier, Eve de Castro-Robinson, Sam Sampson and Lloyd Jones.
