Henrietta Harris | Britomart

01.10.21

Henrietta Harris has been commissioned to create a new outdoor exhibition "By It's Own Light" at Britomart.

Harris spends a lot of time fighting her perfectionist instincts. Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, she’s been drawing ever since she can remember, on a lifelong quest to continue improving her exacting technique. She sometimes paints landscapes, but she’s mostly fascinated by the endless variation she sees in people’s faces. She chooses her portraiture subjects after meeting them in real life or on social media and paints them from photographs shot in natural light. Sometimes she obscures her work with a disruptive slash of colour. “I think that's my way of trying to be looser and freer with my work,” she says, “but I can't seem to get away from doing everything precisely and properly.”

These works surrounding The Pavilions in Britomart are taken from photographs of a series of her paintings.  The exhibition will run through Spring and as outdoors, is open 24 hours, 7 days a week!
