Artists in Isolation: Peter Gouge
Newly returned to New Zealand PETER GOUGE shares his bubble with his wife Chloe and their young son as well as his parents at their family home. They arrived back from Florida - where they have been living for the past 6 years – just as the country was going into level 4 lockdown and have been fortunate to have such a wonderful place to self-isolate. “We're out in a rural area in Northland––a lucky spot to wait things out. We've been marvelling at the landscape here, Florida is extremely flat so it's a bit of a change. Of course, our son loves it here. He's quickly becoming a stereotypical Kiwi––learning to walk in slightly too big gumboots and pretending to ride the tractor.”
Just prior to leaving Florida, Peter presented his PHD exhibition....... We will post some shots of the exhibition here shortly so watch this space! “Writing up my thesis and preparing to graduate has taken up most of my time since I’ve been back, but like many others I've taken up a new hobby. Recently, my practice has been about making functional artwork––this has introduced me to a whole new world of craft, and I've been trying to learn some new technical processes. Here, I'm working on carving spoons. Hopefully the next ones will be a little less oddly proportioned.”
