Claudia Jowitt

Ua Levu

11th Mar –
2nd Apr 2026

OPENING EVENT: Wednesday, 11 March, 5.30-7.30pm

A solo presentation by Claudia Jowitt exploring the sculptural possibilities of paint and following on from her Dowse exhibition "Uana: Carried by the Waves" - her first solo exhibition in a public gallery.

Jowitt’s practice is also steeped in the histories and language of abstraction, drawing on a lineage of artists who have pushed paint beyond the frame—into sculptural space and the realms of process, gesture, and expression. Yet her work also charts its own course, carrying with it motifs and materials that bring together these two quite different currents in her work: shell, coral, masi, and seaweed are inlaid into surfaces thick with paint, resin and other mediums creating a vista of delicate, yet intensely detailed reliefs.

Claudia Jowitt (b.1989) is a Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland–based artist of Pākehā and iTaukei (Fijian) heritage whose multi‑dimensional practice rethinks the boundaries of painting through sculptural form, material hybridity, and cultural resonance. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Elam School of Fine Arts (University of Auckland), a Bachelor of Art and Design (Hons), a Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT University, and studied at Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
