New work by Sam Mitchell looks at the idea of the American Beefcake / Hunks as inspired by a book called American Hunks that looks at the history of body building from the early 1800s to how Hollywood used it in epic Roman based dramas of the early 1940's - 1970's. Images in the exhibition also draw on the existence of a band of warriors in the time of Alexander the Great - The Sacred Band of Thebes consisting of 150 couples - fierce fighters who were also lovers - a band of gay warriors who remained undefeated until Alexander. A monument to these three hundred men was erected by Alexander and today stands as the Lion of Chaeronea.
