SAM MITCHELL has new work in the exhibition "Modern People" curated by Jaenine Parkinson for the New Zealand Portrait Gallery in Wellington 25 March - 9 June 2019.
Artists in Aotearoa New Zealand have increasingly used different styles of representation to enable expression and communication about their subjects beyond physical likeness. Some of these styles are absorbed from international trends such as cubism and pop art, others convey meaning that express local cultures.
This collection of homegrown examples shows some of the various creative and stylistic techniques employed by New Zealand portrait artists, including synthetic colouring, minimal detail, expressive lines, symbolism and surrealism, fractured compositions and collage.
