Darryn George

Bio.

Darryn George is a Ōtautahi / Christchurch based painter of Ngāpuhi descent.  He has exhibited extensively in both public and private spaces since the 1990s.  He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Canterbury University, 1993) a Diploma of Teaching,  Master of Fine Arts Painting (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, 1998).

George’s work reflects the duality of his cultural roots—having a Christian faith along with Māori heritage. Although he has moved across more figurative styles, George is currently working primarily with geometric abstraction.  Traditionally within art history the abstraction of form avoids cultural references.  George however interweaves them to create his own personal style and visual language.

Works by Darryn George are held in private and public collections throughout Aotearoa New Zealand including The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and the Chartwell Collection, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.  He has completed numerous commissions including the Large Glass for Deutsche Bank Head office New Zealand, and ‘Whakapai’ for Connells Bay Sculpture Park, Waiheke. In 2013 he exhibited during the Venice Biennale at the Palazzo Bembo as part of the Personal Structures official collateral events.  His work is the subject of the artist’s monograph Darryn George (Mihi Publishers, Christchurch, 2010).

Darryn George will exhibit new work with Melanie Roger Gallery at the Aotearoa Art Fair 2025.  This is his first time showing with the gallery.
