Recent painting by SAM MITCHELL. 2021 marks a milestone birthday for the artist and as such she has reflected back on her own life with fourteen key figures / texts that have been an influence on her – personally and as an artist.
Mitchell is an avid consumer of information, devouring pop culture with historical research in equal measures. Her resulting portraits chronicle the lives of her subjects peppering them with references and anecdotes to celebrate their achievements and milestones.
Included are well known authors Jane Austen, Roald Dahl and Stephen King, alongside less famous Joan Harrison who was a script writer for Alfred Hitchcock who himself makes an appearance. Literature and film are featured and personified as characters themselves....The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein and Mrs Dalloway – their plots and themes interwoven into stylized renditions of the characters that inhabit their stories.
